After recently attending an Italian wine showcase, I noticed that the Bouchard Finlayson Hannibal 2020 contains two popular Italian varietals – Sangiovese & Nebbiolo. With Italian wine imports to South Africa up by 83% I was interested to see how our locally grown ones stack up.

The Bouchard Finlayson 2020 is a blend of 41% Sangiovese, 26% Nebbiolo, 10% Barbera, 9% Shiraz, 8% Pinot Noir & 6% Mourvedre. It is rather good, with the final blend assembled after a year of each variety maturing in small barrels (17% new).

Bouchard Finlayson Hannibal Tasting Notes

An elegant wine, light ruby in colour, with delicate violet and new leather on the nose. When entering the palate, you are greeted with a medium-bodied, medium-tannin mouth feel; finishing off with a burst of fresh cranberries and a similar alkalinity to rooibos tea.

This wine is best suited to soft/tender red meat like a medium-rare peppered ostrich steak. Or even an Italian meatball pasta with a bit of spice.

Vinification

The Bouchard Finlayson Hannibal 2020 is the 20th edition – marking this vintage a significant milestone for the winery in one’s collection.

In the vineyard, the naturally low-yielding, mature vineyards were hand-harvested over six weeks. Following alcoholic fermentation in the tank, the individual components were barrelled down for a lengthy, secondary malo-lactic fermentation; with the Sangiovese taking up to nine months to mature.
